the scoop
celiac disease
celiac disease is an inherited autoimmune disease; it is NOT a food allergy. 1 in 133 americans are currently living with celiac disease. when a person with celiac disease eats or ingests any food or beauty product (i.e. lip-gloss, shampoo, moisturizer etc) that contains gluten, their body attacks itself resulting in damage to the small intestine. gluten is the generic name for a protein found in the grains wheat, rye, barley and oat. the damage comes as a direct result of that person’s body not being able to tolerate gluten and does not allow the body to properly absorb nutrients. if one lives with untreated and/or undiagnosed celiac disease, it can lead to other serious illnesses.
